Introduction to SBS
The School of Biblical Studies (SBS) is an intensive nine-month Bible study program designed to take you on a transformative journey through the entirety of Scripture. This course is dedicated to developing a deep understanding of the Word of God, using the inductive Bible study method to examine the context, historical background, and literary form of each book.
If you’re passionate about learning how to study and interpret Scripture effectively, the SBS in Mombasa offers an environment where you will gain tools to engage with God’s Word and apply it in your life and ministry. The goal is to equip believers to teach and preach the Bible with confidence and accuracy, as well as to grow in their personal walk with God.
Course Overview
The SBS is divided into three quarters over nine months:
- Quarter 1: This quarter will majorly focus on the New Testament. In the final quarter, you’ll dive into the teachings and theology of the apostles, exploring the birth of the church, Paul’s letters, and the eschatology found in Revelation.
- Quarter 2: Genesis to Kings (Old Testament). You’ll begin by exploring the Pentateuch and historical books, learning the foundational stories and covenants that shape the rest of the Bible. Emphasis is placed on the narrative of God’s relationship with humanity and the early formation of Israel.
- Quarter 3: Prophets, Wisdom Literature, and Gospels. This section includes an in-depth study of the major and minor prophets, the poetry of Psalms and Proverbs, and a detailed look at the life of Christ through the Gospels.
Inductive Bible Study Method
Throughout the course, the inductive study method is used to approach Scripture. This method involves three steps:
- Observation: What does the text say?
You will learn to ask the right questions, identify key themes, and observe patterns in the text. - Interpretation: What does the text mean?
Understanding the cultural, historical, and literary context is essential for interpretation. You will engage with several bible resource materials, historical studies, and cross-references. - Application: How does the text apply to life today?
The Bible is meant to transform lives. You will explore how Scripture applies to personal growth, ministry, and mission.
